It's very basic; when you plug it in, it goes to a warming mode (the directions state brown rice should be warmed for 15 minutes prior to cooking). when ready to cook, you simply depress the cook button. It then heats the contents to boiling and when ready, automatically switches back to the warming mode. The rice can continue warming for a couple of hours. Whenever ready to stop, simply unplug the unit and fluff the rice.

I must admit I have no experience with rice-cookers so my experience with the Miracle could be affected by my own ineptitude. To date, as far as grains are concerned, I've only made brown rice. My first attempt was 2 cups (the little plastic cup size which comes with the machine is smaller than one cup) and it worked fairly well with only a little rim of sludge around the edge of the glass top that occurred when it was pushed up during the boiling phase. The rice also stuck slightly to the bottom of the pan and was more moist in some areas than others, but I might have put in too much water. The directions call for extra water when cooking brown rice so with experimentation, I hope to improve on this. next, I tried making 3 cups of brown rice and had quite a bit of boil over, with sludge running down the face of the cooker. I wonder what kind of mess results if you try to make all 8 cups? obviously, I need more experience.

That aside, I have to say my efforts resulted in the best rice I've ever tasted! I feel like I can now get into all those healthy grains like millet, quinoa - and of course, brown rice - and switch from wheat-based products. I also steamed some vegetables in the steaming basket. they cooked in less time than I anticipated and even though I overcooked them (they never changed their bright colors so I thought they weren't done), they tasted fantastic. I've always felt uneasy about cooking vegetables in the microwave and now I'm finally liberated! The taste improvement alone is worth the investment in this cooker!

When initially searching for a rice cooker, I was disappointed all the fancy, multi-function rice cookers didn't come with stainless steel pots. Fuzzy-logic sounds so cool. but, according to a NY Times article (Sept 30 '08, "The Steamy Way to Dinner") one button varieties actually may have more flexibility. "It's easy to override the machine's small brain. Press the "cook" button, melt butter in the bowl, and sweat a finely diced shallot in it until soft - then add rice, broth and saffron strands, and start the machine again to make a daffodil-yellow pilaf". (Although, I think the directions enclosed with the ME81 stated you shouldn't repress the cook button, probably for risk of burning the contents of the pot.) according to the NY Times, "The most intriguing recipes are those that have been developed, out of necessity or curiosity, entirely for the rice cooker, like the ones here" and then introduces food blogger Hui Leng Tay teczcape.blogspot there are also some recipe links. just looking at the pictures makes me want to start experimenting.

"I have an inexpensive rice cooker. it works more or less perfectly. I always make brown rice. I don't know what brand the cooker is.

I wanted this cooker, which seems legendary and promising, so I bought it. Yesterday I tried it. I didn't have time to read the instructions in depth, but I think I got the gist -- it didn't seem complex. And I also bought The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook -- I have really been bitten by the rice cooker bug. I am basically a cooking illiterate, though.

I really wanted to try it out immediately, but I had a doctor's appointment. So I tried the timing feature. I think it worked fine. The appointment took longer than I expected. I didn't arrive home till 4 p.m., which I expected would be no big deal. Everything seemed fine. When I got home the cooker was on "keep warm" or whatever.

I had tried to follow all the instructions I found (and they didn't seem bad to me, as others indicate -- maybe they have been rewritten), but the brown rice (short grain Diamond California Select brown, my favorite mainly because it is cheap and good) was an overwet clammy, sticky bunch of rice. I am tolerant and I like rice, so I liked this ok, but it wasn't as good as the rice I have been accustomed to every day. Cleaning out the pot was not as easy as has been mentioned elsewhere, either. The rice didn't fall out of the pan -- it stuck to the sides to a certain extent. it was still pretty easy, but the other reviews made me expect something wondrous.

This was a shock to me because I expected the perfect rice that is the mantra of the reviews you see here. next time (today, that is) I will try rinsing it more and using less water.

"This cooker is pretty good. it cooks fast, and is very easy to clean (residue does not stubbornly stick to the surface and washes away easily). I have used it for probably six months or longer now without experiencing any serious issues. But, I have to agree with one other reviewer here. it leaks out water badly through the lid and makes a mess on the counter. With that being said, however, I must add that it also depends on much water you use. If you use the right amount of water for the right amount of rice, it does not leak. So, the whole point if leaking is a moot point. But, it still does make the lid very messy after cooking the rice. So, to sum it up, this may not be an excellent rice cooker. But, it is very good. And compared to many others out there, this one is damn good. "I am the type of person who would prefers having their food stick to a surface rather than having it not stick but be exposed to carcinogens and all sorts of other chemicals that I don't know about. I searched for this stainless steel rice cooker. The rice is in contact with steel, not teflon. If I only remembered to add a little vegetable oil to the water and rice, then I'm sure that it wouldn't stick to the bottom as much or not at all. SLOW COOKER LENTIL AND BROWN RICE SOUP WITH PRESERVED LEMON AND GARLIC CHICKEN SAUSAGE
The combination of preserved lemon and garlic really makes this soup sing. For the stovetop version of this recipe, please visit Soup Chick. Serves 6.

2 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
12 oz roasted garlic chicken sausage, cut in half lengthwise, then cut across into 1/4-inch moons
1 large clove garlic, thinly sliced
1 cup lentils
1/2 cup brown rice
9 cups stock (I use homemade rotisserie chicken stock, but use any type of stock you have, or water)
1 Tbsp soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 Tbsp minced preserved lemon rind, plus additional for garnish
1 Tbsp fresh black pepper, or more to taste
Kosher salt, if needed, to taste

In a frying pan, heat the oil over low heat. Add the onions and sausage, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes, until the sausage is lightly browned on both sides.

Transfer onions and sausage to a 4-quart slow cooker, along with the remaining ingredients. Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours, until the rice is tender. Check the level of liquid during that time; if necessary, add 1 cup of water to keep the lentils from sticking.

Serve hot, garnished with additional minced preserved lemon rind, or allow to cool completely and freeze for up to six months. when you are ready to reheat, you'll probably have to add water or more stock, as the lentils and rice will absorb every bit of liquid you give them.

You measure the water by putting your finger inside the cooker until the tip of your finger touches the top of the rice, dont put it all the way in to the bottom of the rice cooker, your finger just have to touch the top of the rice and the water should go up as high as the first part of your finger (is that how you say it? you know how your fingers has three lines/bones from the palm that makes it look like it has three parts? thats what i mean.. i dont know the word in english - maybe phalanx?)
anyway, no matter if it's 2 cups or 10 cups, the way to cook rice is the same, put finger in, touch the top of the rice, masure level of water by letting the water go up to the first part-from the tip of the finger that touches the rice.

When its only 1 cup, then you put your finger all the way in to the bottom of the rice cooker and let the water go up to one and a half parts of the finger, because there arent so much rice.

A nice Indonesian recipe for tasty rice called "Nasi Uduk" (I'm Indonesian, rice is our staple food) that you can try with your new rice cooker:

put the rice in the cooker, rinse it a couple of times (thai jasmine long grain rice is the best for this or any south east asian or chinese recipes) and then put some water and coconut milk in (since the coconut milk you get in Europe or the US are in cans or boxes they are usually too thick, you have to think it with water until the consistency is like regular milk), mix it with chicken powder and salt and taste. (remember how to measure it, using the same method i explained, both water and coconut milk must measure to one part-the first part from your finger)
you can also put two or three lime leaves in and one pandan leaf if you can find it where you live, but if not, the lime leaves are enough.
Then you cook the rice in the rice cooker (once or twice you can open the lif and with a wooden spoon mix it to make the lime taste from the leaves evenly distributed)

Eat the rice with:

Sliced Omelette (make omelette with salt and pepper only and slice it into thin cuts)

Coriander Fried Chicken (marinade chicken in plenty of salt, pepper, garlic, ground coriander, cook it in a little coconut milk mixed with water until all the moisture is gone and absorbed in the chicken, and then deep-fry the chicken)

Fried Shrimp and Potato Sambal (cut potato into small cubes, deep[ fry them. Fry garlic, shallot and chillies that has been blended/ground in some oil, add salt, two lime leaves, a stick of lemon grass (cut the ends of the lemon grass and then if you have a hammer or use the handle of a big knife, hit the lemon grass with it a few times until it's a little flat, to make the juice and flavor inside flow out) and cook for 5 minutes or so, add some white sugar and then throw the shrimps/prawns and fried potatoes in and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes or until its cooked, you can taste it and you will know when its done,

and slice some cucumbers and lettuce.. you're ready to go.

When it comes to basmati, its almost the same but you should put slightly more water as it is not as soft as the usual rice, and if you want you can put some butter as well.

With glutinous rice, you normally dont cook it with a rice cooker but you steam it until it's done, usually in 30 to 40 minutes depends on how much rice you are cooking.

I can give you tons of other recipes, and while it sounds hard to do, but when you start doing it you will find that all my recipes are actually very easy to do.
