We purchased this rice cooker last week, and have used it twice for brown rice. The rice came out better (and with less effort on our part) than any other cooking method we’ve ever used. It was, in short, the best brown rice we’d ever had anywhere.

We also tried out the warming function, in which the machine keeps rice warm for up to 12 hours on normal warm mode–there’s also an extended warm mode for up to 48 hours. after about 8 hours on warming mode, the rice was virtually the same as when it had just been cooked.

The machine could not be easier to use. Build and material quality appear first rate. The rice pan is heavy duty–same for the non-stick coating. very quiet in operation, very easy to clean. All sorts of little details that suggest many cycles of refinement in the design. Aesthetics are delightfully Japanese. The stainless steel side and top panels appear as an afterthought designed to fit Western tastes.

One thing I haven’t seen anyone else mention about Zojirushi rice cookers. On the last page in the owner’s manual there’s a footnote which suggests vaguely that this rice cooker may not function well at high altitude. Since I live in Santa Fe at 7,000 feet, I called Zojirushi USA and asked about this. They told me that their rice machines do not function well above 3,000 feet, and that I should return the machine I purchased. well, instead, we tried it at better than double its supposed elevation limit, and as mentioned above, it worked perfectly–so it’s hard to imagine that it might work MORE perfectly below 3,000 feet. Suffice it to say that if you live in Denver, Albuquerque or Santa Fe, you can ignore Zojirushi’s disclaimers about poor function at higher elevation.

All in all, this is a superb product that combines the otherwise mutually exclusive benefits of perfect rice with set and forget automation. The folks at Zojirushi USA (aside from their apparent ignorance about cooking rice at altitude) are informative and friendly. we tend to buy the best kitchen equipment we can find just to avoid the hassles of unreliability. Accordingly, we’re difficult to please, and this machine meets our (very high) standards.

LONG TERM USE UPDATE (January, 2009):

This machine has continued to function flawlessly. Apparently Zojirushi induction rice cookers aren’t well known in northern new Mexico, since whenever we have a dinner party and rice is on the menu, our guests are always intrigued by this thing, and regularly end up buying one of their own.

One clarification: the cooking bowl is stainless steel, as is the inside cooking bowl cover. Apparently these parts tend to be aluminum on the vast majority of computerized rice cookers, even those from Zojirushi. The bowl is coated in some sort of very heavy duty anti-stick coating–after a year or two of use, the coating still looks new–it hasn’t started flaking off at all. I would guess that boiling water (which is basically what rice cookers do) isn’t too hard on the coating, and we’re probably not poisoning ourselves, the way we might be if we used non-stick pans (which we don’t).

Reference my comments above about Zojirushi rice cookers working perfectly at high elevation (which was news even to Zojirushi), I’ve since heard that high elevation performance may be better with induction rice cookers than with computerized rice cookers with standard heating elements. Who knows. What is definite, however, is that as of this writing this machine has functioned perfectly at 7,000 feet for almost two years.

Round kitchen tables are in and sharp angular kitchen tables are out. at least, if you have been consulting your Feng Shui manual, you’ll know that your kitchen will be that much more in harmony if your kitchen table is either round or oval. if you already have a rectangular kitchen table, then at least try to have the corners rounded.

Taking Feng Shui a little further, your round kitchen table should be yellow in color or at least close to. So in that case pine or another light colored wood seems like a good choice.

Maybe you are not a Feng Shui fan. In that case consider the other very practical advantages of round kitchen tables. Firstly you can always find room to seat one more person around a round kitchen table. when you have a large family or many people to visit all of the same time, then as long as you have enough kitchen chairs, you’ll always be able to squeeze one more person in.

Secondly, because there are no sharp corners that protrude from the table, round kitchen tables are a better bet when you have small children running around. Naturally, you can always put padding for protectors on the right-angled corners of the square table, but a round table will stay beautiful as it is without the need for any further protection. In addition to that, in a world that’s full of straight lines and squares, a few soft curves and circles make a welcome visual break as well.

Thirdly, there is a very social, not to say sociable, aspect to round kitchen tables. there is no “pecking order” in terms of who sits where. Everybody coming to sit down at a round table is equal to everybody else. round tables also encourage participation in conversation for the same reason. So if you want to get people involved in discussions and feeling fully part of the coffee meeting, the meal or whatever the event is, then round tables have a lot to add to them.

Even though it was outside of a kitchen setting, David Ogilvy, the famous advertising genius, always favored a round table for his team meetings for that very reason. He said that a round table allowed him to see the light of conviction in the eyes of even the most junior members. Taking that same notion into a kitchen and their families setting, you’ll see how great it is when even the youngest member of the family takes an active role in family meal times.

Whether you choose a round table for your kitchen that stands on a central pedestal or has four solid table legs underneath, you can also be assured that round kitchen tables will look great from any angle. if you want to go one further with round kitchen tables, then take a leaf out of the Chinese kitchen book. The Chinese have well understood the advantage of using round kitchen tables that turn. this means that they can load up the table surface with great things to eat, and have them rotate around to all the different people round the table.

Mixed Vegetables and Tofu Fried Rice (Brown rice)

Many of my customers have informed me that they are very health conscious and are making an effort to eat healthier. I am often asked to prepare dishes for those who want to eat something nutritious and exotic with a Thai flavor. This recipe is just one of the many dishes my customers love.

The beauty of this dish is that it is healthy, flavorful and easy to make. It can be enjoyed by itself or together with other dishes. all the ingredients used can be found in your neighborhood supermarkets such as whole Foods or Publix. An optional ingredient used is red rice, which can be purchased at all local oriental grocery stores. in addition, you can use up left over vegetables from previous meals for this dish.

4 servings

Ingredients

1 cup brown rice or 1 ½ cups if not using red rice.
½ cup red rice (optional, if you like to add nutty flavor to the dish)
2 cups water
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
2 cups cubes extra firm tofu, 1/2 inch size cubes, blanch in boiling water for a few minutes, drain and set aside.
Cut choice of vegetables into small pieces, then mix. Some vegetables options are carrots, cabbage, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, green beans or any other of your favorite vegetables. (Even use the left overs -as long as not fried)
1 tablespoon seasoning sauce (Maggi)
½ teaspoon of sea salt (skip, if on low sodium diet)
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
A pinch of white ground pepper or freshly ground black pepper

Cook Rice

The best way to cook rice is by using a rice cooker. If you choose to cook both brown and red rice, mix them well, soak in water for about 30 minutes prior to cooking. Then add water and rice to rice cooker, and follow cooker directions.

Preparation

Mix the seasoning sauce and set aside. Heat a large pan or wok on high heat with oil, add all the vegetables. Cook well on high heat for 3-4 minutes. Reduce stove to medium heat, add tofu and seasoning mixture, toss gently until mixed well. Reduce heat again to low, add cooked rice and stir gently to mix all of the ingredients, add white ground pepper. Increase the heat to high again for a quick last minute stir.

Tips

Avoid cooking rice in the pan on high heat for too long because rice will stick to the pan.
Cucumbers is not a good option when cooking with rice but delicious on the side.
Tomato lovers can add tomatoes to this recipe also. Just make sure to add it almost to the end of the cooking process and do not over cook.
Use low sodium soy sauce, skip the seasoning sauce and salt if on low sodium diet.
Eggs can be added at the very beginning (before vegetables), beat egg lightly in the pan, cook for a minute or two.

the traditional dining table medium is cumbersome, usually in the legs or base, which leads to some very heavy pieces of furniture. another standard feature is a sort of design feature ornate or embellished. these can be in the form of carved legs or bases, or scroll to the lathelegs, and tables with etched designs. by contrast, contemporary dining room table may seem simple and boring, with simple clean lines and understated design. where traditional dining sets employ much decoration as possible, the modern dining set is the complete opposite direction, avoiding ornaments for simplicity. the modern dining room sets are elegant and sophisticated, with sharp angles and geometric patterns.

E 'not only design in which we see the differences, though. There was also a fundamental change in the finishes and textures and how the wood is treated and used in modern dining furniture compared to their ancestors. Older pieces tend to accentuate the wood grain finish with medium dark range, like cherry and mahogany. Today's styles of dining furniture tend to go more to the extreme, as far as finishes go. For the most part, modern dining sets are bothreally dark, espresso black, or very pale, with shades of white lighter natural finishes. There are always exceptions, of course, but for the most part, this difference is real. the use of engineered wood has increased over the last decade or two, and this also had an effect on the look of the dining rooms. Veneers that are used so often now give the pieces a sleek, shiny finish, usually without the wood grain to show everyone.

Remembersimplicity is the key when trying to contemporary dining. something too ornate held away from the real project of modern furniture dining room or on the decoration of the dining room is out of balance. and once you find the perfect set dining room, the dining room will be anything but average.

Youth centre flooded after roof lead stolen

A youth education centre was flooded by heavy rain after thieves stripped lead from the roof.

The Alternatives in Mind project, based in the former Roller City building in well i'th' Lane, has been forced to close following the flood.

Water poured in from holes in the roof, causing thousands of pounds of damage to a new kitchen donated by a local firm.

The reception area in the two-floor building was also left waterlogged following the downpour on Sunday morning.

Graham Stephens, head of the education programme which helps boys in Year 10 and 11 who have dropped out of school, fears that the worktops and cupboards in the kitchen could be warped by the water. the not-for-profit community business has its own indoor go-kart track.

It also teaches maths, English and skills in decorating, plumbing and pointing as well as vehicle mechanics.

Mr Stephens, who runs the project with a support worker, found the damage when he arrived at the centre on Monday morning.

He said: "This project is on a shoestring anyway and the cost of the repairs will have to come out of my pocket. we are also lucky that local businesses help us out. whoever has done this has not thought about what they have done. and even if they do it is a matter of if they actually care."
