Citadel enlists a monster hit
Fraser's latest, true love Lies, premiered at Manchester's Royal Exchange, then opened the season at Toronto's Factory Theatre to raves. it is a funny, heartfelt exploration of a family dynamic jarred out of its usual expectations. In it, we'll rejoin a character we met in Fraser's breakout Unidentified Human Remains And the true Nature Of love and Poor Super Man. yes, 20 years later, David McMillan is back, now an urbane restaurateur, in the play that's regarded by many to be Fraser's best.
" Really funny," says Baker, "a situation comedy with a twist ... and subject matter and language you're not going to see on television." Ron Jenkins directs the Citadel production.
The Rice season also includes Studies In Motion, an innovative, award-winning multimedia production by Vancouver's Electric Company, first seen at the 2006 PUSH Festival, then reworked extensively.
In it, Kevin Kerr (currently on loan to the University of Alberta as playwright-in-residence) explores the world of moving picture pioneer Eadweard Muybridge, a man with a truly bizarre biography that includes acquittal on a murder rap. Baker says the Electric Company is "leading the field as multi-disciplinary storytellers!" Studies In Motion is part of the Rice season due to its on-the-edge nature, but with its barrage of projections and its nine actors, the show will play the larger Shoctor Stage.
Toronto's Tar ragon Theatre ( Scorched, Courageous) brings its production of Joan MacLeod's Another Home Invasion. the solo show, by all reports, is a triumph for the extraordinary Nicola Lipman, as an 80-year-old with escalating problems. "Shockingly familiar and relevant," Baker says of the questions about "whether we're actually there for our seniors in the crunch. a simple storyline, but a complex, emotional landscape."
In addition to little Women, the Citadel's "family series" includes the 11th return of a Christmas Carol, and the Manitoba Theatre For Young People production of Rick: the Rick Hansen Story, commissioned from playwright Dennis Foon.
Baker also announced Wednesday the creation of the Robbins Academy at the Citadel, a venture that will bring together the theatre's play development arm, its professional program for young professionals, its young companies, the Foote Theatre School, and its education and outreach programs.
"There is nothing like it anywhere in the country," says Baker. "It's Canada's most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre."
