Round kitchen tables are in and sharp angular kitchen tables are out. at least, if you have been consulting your Feng Shui manual, you’ll know that your kitchen will be that much more in harmony if your kitchen table is either round or oval. if you already have a rectangular kitchen table, then at least try to have the corners rounded.
Taking Feng Shui a little further, your round kitchen table should be yellow in color or at least close to. So in that case pine or another light colored wood seems like a good choice.
Maybe you are not a Feng Shui fan. In that case consider the other very practical advantages of round kitchen tables. Firstly you can always find room to seat one more person around a round kitchen table. when you have a large family or many people to visit all of the same time, then as long as you have enough kitchen chairs, you’ll always be able to squeeze one more person in.
Secondly, because there are no sharp corners that protrude from the table, round kitchen tables are a better bet when you have small children running around. Naturally, you can always put padding for protectors on the right-angled corners of the square table, but a round table will stay beautiful as it is without the need for any further protection. In addition to that, in a world that’s full of straight lines and squares, a few soft curves and circles make a welcome visual break as well.
Thirdly, there is a very social, not to say sociable, aspect to round kitchen tables. there is no “pecking order” in terms of who sits where. Everybody coming to sit down at a round table is equal to everybody else. round tables also encourage participation in conversation for the same reason. So if you want to get people involved in discussions and feeling fully part of the coffee meeting, the meal or whatever the event is, then round tables have a lot to add to them.
Even though it was outside of a kitchen setting, David Ogilvy, the famous advertising genius, always favored a round table for his team meetings for that very reason. He said that a round table allowed him to see the light of conviction in the eyes of even the most junior members. Taking that same notion into a kitchen and their families setting, you’ll see how great it is when even the youngest member of the family takes an active role in family meal times.
Whether you choose a round table for your kitchen that stands on a central pedestal or has four solid table legs underneath, you can also be assured that round kitchen tables will look great from any angle. if you want to go one further with round kitchen tables, then take a leaf out of the Chinese kitchen book. The Chinese have well understood the advantage of using round kitchen tables that turn. this means that they can load up the table surface with great things to eat, and have them rotate around to all the different people round the table.
the dining room is a place where tradition and style of old values are still living in our world of text messaging, blackberries and HDTV. Families gathering together to share a meal and some conversation can seem almost obsolete, but I bet it still exists in some families across the country. and while the practice of families gathered around the dinner table may seem outdated, the dining room furniture should not be gathered around. There arethe abundance of modern dining room sets available that fit the decorating styles of the modern home. here are some characteristics of modern dining.
the traditional dining table medium is cumbersome, usually in the legs or base, which leads to some very heavy pieces of furniture. another standard feature is a sort of design feature ornate or embellished. these can be in the form of carved legs or bases, or scroll to the lathelegs, and tables with etched designs. by contrast, contemporary dining room table may seem simple and boring, with simple clean lines and understated design. where traditional dining sets employ much decoration as possible, the modern dining set is the complete opposite direction, avoiding ornaments for simplicity. the modern dining room sets are elegant and sophisticated, with sharp angles and geometric patterns.
E 'not only design in which we see the differences, though. There was also a fundamental change in the finishes and textures and how the wood is treated and used in modern dining furniture compared to their ancestors. Older pieces tend to accentuate the wood grain finish with medium dark range, like cherry and mahogany. Today's styles of dining furniture tend to go more to the extreme, as far as finishes go. For the most part, modern dining sets are bothreally dark, espresso black, or very pale, with shades of white lighter natural finishes. There are always exceptions, of course, but for the most part, this difference is real. the use of engineered wood has increased over the last decade or two, and this also had an effect on the look of the dining rooms. Veneers that are used so often now give the pieces a sleek, shiny finish, usually without the wood grain to show everyone.
Remembersimplicity is the key when trying to contemporary dining. something too ornate held away from the real project of modern furniture dining room or on the decoration of the dining room is out of balance. and once you find the perfect set dining room, the dining room will be anything but average.
With so many competing calls on our time every day, when we come home and start to prepare a meal we want to do so with the minimum fuss and the maximum ease. Luckily, many of today’s kitchen appliances are designed to meet that need, and there are certainly some appliances that no kitchen can do without.
Whether you are buying new or upgrading existing appliances, downsizing your home and need more functional equipment, leaving home or setting up on your own for the first time, or choosing a gift for someone else, it helps to think through what functions
you perform most often in the kitchen and where an appliance can streamline that function for you.
a little time spent assessing your needs can save wasted money on appliances that sit in the back of the cupboard and never get used. with regularly used equipment, it often pays to consider upgrading as a newer model may quickly pay for itself in increased efficiency, saving money, resources (like water and power) and time.
Here’s a quick summary of what I believe to be the top 10 most indispensable small kitchen appliances – you may want to add some (or all) to your shopping or wish list today!
Microwaves –- these benchtop ovens use microwave radiation to heat or cook food quickly. They are compact, super-convenient and very versatile (if you learn to do more than heat water or defrost meat in them).
Toasters –- Small kitchen appliances purpose-built for toasting bread and bread products like muffins, crumpets etc. much more energy efficient than using a stove-top grill, these are considered an essential by most households.
Dishwashers –- Dishwashers take the boringly repetitive task of cleaning dishes and automates it – someone still has to load and empty it, though. Terrific for larger households. Today’s models are extremely efficient in their use of resources.
Electric Kettles –- another appliance considered an essential by many. Boil water for hot drinks by running a small electric current through the base or element of the kettle. much quicker and more efficient than boiling a bot of water on the stove.
Coffee Machines –- For the coffee devotee, a home coffee machine seems indispensable. Fresh hot java in the morning at the touch of the button, and no ugly styrofoam cups.
Multi-Stack Electric Food Steamers –- the biggest advantage of these devices over the stovetop method of steaming is the ability to cook different foodstuffs, for example, a piece of fish and some vegetables, at the same time without the flavour of one affecting the other. Plus, you can cook a whole meal in one unit.
Slow Cookers –- another terrific meal-in-one-pot device, the slow cooker makes up in convenience what it seems to cost in time. This appliance allows you to put the entire contents of a stew, bake or casserole into the cooker in the morning, set it on the appropriate setting and head for work. Your meal will slowly cook all day, allowing you to make the most of your time in the evening.
Turbo Convection Ovens –- a great choice for roasts and baking. Due to the air circulating around the food throughout the cooking process, they cook evenly and efficiently, usually cutting about 20% off the regular cooking time. Compact and portable, you can take them camping or motorhoming, too, or save space on a larger range.
Indoor Grill –- Grilling is a popular style of low-fat cooking these days, and the indoor grill brings convenience into the equation – no need to fire up the BBQ.
Deep Fryer –- Frying is still very popular, and having a safe convenient way of doing it in your home kitchen means that you can choose the best oils to make quick, healthy deep-fried snacks and meals like tempura vegetables in your own kitchen.
When it comes to working out which small kitchen appliances are essentials in your kitchen, take the time to think about the types of foods you cook most often and where you need to save time, space or money. You will then be able to enjoy purchasing your new kitchen whiz-gadgetry, knowing it is not just for its shiny stainless steel finish!

A youth education centre was flooded by heavy rain after thieves stripped lead from the roof.
The Alternatives in Mind project, based in the former Roller City building in well i'th' Lane, has been forced to close following the flood.
Water poured in from holes in the roof, causing thousands of pounds of damage to a new kitchen donated by a local firm.
The reception area in the two-floor building was also left waterlogged following the downpour on Sunday morning.
Graham Stephens, head of the education programme which helps boys in Year 10 and 11 who have dropped out of school, fears that the worktops and cupboards in the kitchen could be warped by the water. the not-for-profit community business has its own indoor go-kart track.
It also teaches maths, English and skills in decorating, plumbing and pointing as well as vehicle mechanics.
Mr Stephens, who runs the project with a support worker, found the damage when he arrived at the centre on Monday morning.
He said: "This project is on a shoestring anyway and the cost of the repairs will have to come out of my pocket. we are also lucky that local businesses help us out. whoever has done this has not thought about what they have done. and even if they do it is a matter of if they actually care."
