Academy pupils serve up culinary delights

Pupils from the third year at the school fought it out in a special cookery contest.
The boys and girls amazed members of the Forres Rotary Club who were sponsoring the event, and also impressed Forres-based chef Alistair Caldwell with their cooking skills.
This was the first time that the Rotary Club's Young Chef Competition had been put to the school, which delighted an enthusiastic home economics teacher Ann Campbell.
Mrs Campbell challenged her hospitality students to take part in the special event, by selecting six finalists who she put to the task of cooking a two course meal for two people in ninety minutes.
The contestants Finlay Anderson, Shannon Macgregor, Emma Campbell, Cameron Hopes, Daniel Evans and Laura Hobbs rose to the challenge by producing nutritious, well cooked and well presented meals within the alloted time scale.
Their efforts were judged by Mr Caldwell who is better known for the tasty fare that he serves up at the Simply Red Restaurant in Forres.
He narrowed the field down to a final three, awarding first place to Daniel Evans, second place to Laura Hobbs and third place to Cameron Hopes
Daniel's winning dish was fettucine and watercress pesto, and mini apple tart with vanilla ice cream.
Local businessman, Les Hester, who is spokesman for the Forres Rotary Club said they were hoping to repeat the competition next year, with the finalist of the 2010 event going forward to a regional final.
He added that the standing of cooking among the students was very high, and he particularly enjoyed Daniel's apple tart, which he described as delicious.
