If you do not have a separate breakfast nook or eating area in your kitchen but you do not want to eat all of your meals in your formal dining room, then you might look to your kitchen island as a solution to you seating problem. you can use stools to make your kitchen island double as a food preparation surface and an eating surface. if your island already exists and the cabinet underneath the island is the same size as the countertop then it could be a little uncomfortable to sit there since there will not be room for your knees, but it is better than nothing.
If at all possible you should try to design custom kitchen islands with seating. that way you can make sure that it will be comfortable for you to sit there and that you will have enough room to accommodate your entire family if necessary.
There are two ways to make sure that you will have enough leg room. The first is the make sure that the countertop of the kitchen island extends out further than the cabinet underneath on at least one side. that way there is a nice indentation where your knees can fit when you are pulled up to the counter. Some custom designed islands go a step farther and make the section that extends out higher than the rest of the kitchen island.
The second way to make sure that you will have leg room is with kitchen islands with legs. Rather than extra cabinets with a counter on top sitting in the middle of your kitchen, you can have an island that resembles something more like a table because it has legs and empty space underneath. The most common thing is a combination of a cabinet and a table top that extends off one end. that cabinet section usually contains the plumbing for a sink.
If you are concerned about fitting your entire family then you can extend the eating surface around one of the corners. Instead of only have stools on one side, you can put stools on two sides in an L shape. Another option, if you have a big enough space available is an island that looks kind of like a semicircle. The cook stands on the inside of the semicircle and the stools will line the outside which is the longer side.
